LANGUAGE CORNER

Spanish For Parents!

¿Sabías que...?

Cognates are our best friends while trying to learn Español.  "Cognados", or Cognates, are words in two languages that share a similar meaning, spelling, and pronunciation. In English, 30% to 40% of all words have a related word in Spanish.  "Ejemplos":

English  -  Español
Accident - Accidente
Doctor - Doctor
Hospital - Hospital
Hotel - Hotel
Medicine - Medicina
Patient - Paciente

Please note that in Spanish, letter "H" is silent if it's at the beginning of a word.

Chinese For Parents!

Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language. In order to differentiate meanings, the same syllable can be pronounced with different tones. This is called Pinyin.

Mandarin has four main tones and one neutral tone.pinyin

The first tone is high and flat like the English expression "ah". It's a straight horizontal line above the letter in Pinyin.

The second tone rises moderately, such as when you ask the question "what?" It's a rising diagonal line above the letter in Pinyin.

The third tone falls and then rises again, like an English interjection of "well?" It's a curved, dipping line above a letter in Pinyin.

The fourth tone starts out high but drops sharply to the bottom of the tonal range like an angry command such as "Go!" It's a dropping diagonal line above a letter in Pinyin.

The neutral tone doesn't have any tone at all. It's pronounced quickly and lightly without regard to pitch.
